E3 2019 Recap: Devolver Digital

What, you thought we weren’t going to mention Devolver Digital’s E3 conference? You fool! There is no escaping Nina Struthers!

On a more serious note, we’ll talk about the PC-related announcements from Devolver Digital’s E3 presentation and not really discuss the lore of the conference. If you want some entertainment that’s not delivered in videogame form though, be sure to take a peek at the video embedded below.

Devolver Bootleg is a thing, and yes, it’s what you would expect from Devolver Digital

Why play Hotline Miami when you could be playing… Hotline Milwaukee? Yeah, I’m not sure anyone’s ever asked themselves that question, but in the improbable case that you actually had that idea, then the answer is, why not play both? And while we are at it, why not play a bunch of other creative fake clone games? Then get the Devolver Bootleg collection, now available on Steam for just US$4.99 or your regional equivalent.

Devolver Bootleg contains eight original rip-offs of Devolver Digital games including:

Enter The Gun Dungeon

Imagine a dungeon crawler but instead of swords it’s guns. But also everything is made out of guns and bullets and stuff. Like, everything.

Hotline Milwaukee

Brutal, fast-paced, stealth action and a whole lot of blood. From your garbage person apartment in historically interesting and relevant Milwaukee, pick up the phone, and answer the call–of murder. Follow instructions and follow the stairs deeper and deeper into the mysterious basement. Where does it go? Who are you?

Ape Out Jr.

Escape out of ape prison in this classic arcade-style platformer where you play as an orange gorilla who will kill everyone so he can to see his dad again. Grab unsuspecting guards to use as weapons and shields in this completely original idea set to an interpretive chiptune jazz drummer soundtrack. Please, Ape Out was my father’s name.

Shootyboots

It’s the never-ending story of a young boy falling down a well, wearing a giant boot as if it was overalls, which also is a gun. Collect gems, squash and shoot the fauna, fall deeper into the infinite well, and wear some other equally large and ballistically designed shoes.

Super Absolver Mini: Turbo Fighting Championship

(2 Players Only) A competitive fighting game where you play as your choice of one of four masked combat disciples. You choose two special moves. You fight two rounds. The winner is absolved of the obligation to ever have to fight again, but probably will anyway because the one true resolve of the flesh is a fist colliding with it.

Catsylvania

It’s a cat inside of a suit of armor. It’s a cat…In full plate armor. What else do you want?

PikuBiku Ball Stars

(2 Players Only) Everybody’s favorite red thing with legs is back and ready to sink some baskets with a friend. Nothing but net baby. Slam freakin’ dunk.

Luftrousers

Hello, I am Rami Ismail, ½ of Dutch independent game development studio, Vlambeer. We made a version of Luftrausers that had a typo, and JW left the thumbdrive containing the source at a coffee shop somewhere while I was doing a talk in Berlin, then Nairobi, then in Los Angeles the following day. If you find the thumbdrive, can you please return it and please PLEASE do not share the contents with anyone or add it to a compilation of pirated, under-the-table ripoffs of games that Devolver has published.

Phobia Game Studio is making a “reverse horror game” titled Carrion, out next year

There are far more games starring survivors who try to get away from monstrous creatures than the opposite, so it’s understandable that developers Phobia Game Studio want to change gears for a bit and dedicate their upcoming title Carrion to undoing this trope. Does that mean we get to play as the baddie in a horror game? You betcha, Carrion stars a weird, amorphous creature captured by some pesky humans. Our objective? Get out of containment, absorbing everything on our path so we can evolve into even more powerful forms along the way.

To be honest, I’m not sure the poor creature is truly an evil being, even if it looks horrifying and eats people for lunch. Wait, don’t lynch me! I’m just saying that being captured and kept in a cell while some weird scientists experiment on you could make even the most peaceful person snap.

This is not battle royale: Fall Guys puts 100 players together, then asks them to outscore each other in 30 different minigames

Why kill each other when you could use your minigame prowess to decide the victor? What’s the point of a battle royale if everyone’s covered in blood at the end? Is that even a real question? I don’t know, ask Mediatonic, the guys behind the upcoming 100 player minigame-a-thon Fall Guys.
